Part II Reading Comprehension

Directions: In this part there are 4 passages. Each passage is followed by a number of   comprehension questions. For each of them there are four choices marked A), B), C) and D). You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet with a single line through the center.

Passage 1
You speak, write a letter, and make a telephone call. Your words carry a message. People communicate with words. But do you think you can communicate without words? A smile on your face shows you are happy and friendly. Tears in your eyes tell others that you are sad. When you raise your hand in class, your teacher knows you want to say something or ask questions. You shake your head, and people know you are saying "No." You nod, and people know you are saying, "Yes." Other things can also carry messages. For example, a sign at the bus helps you know which bus to take. A sign on the door tells you where to go in or out. Have you ever noticed that there are a lot of signs around you and that you receive messages from them all the time?
People can communicate in many other ways. An artist can use his drawing to describe beautiful mountains, the blue sea and many other things. Books are written to tell about all the wonderful things in the world and also about people and their ideas.
Books, magazines, TV, radio and films all help us communicate with others. They all help us to know what is going on in the world and what other people are thinking about.

Passage 2
“I kept my secret for five long years,” the old woman told the newspaper reporter. The year was 1819, and she was 106 years old. The reporter thought she did not look older than 60 or 70.
The woman was Julian. When she was 15, she had fallen in love with a young soldier, William Golding. William’s army was sent to the West Indies. Julian did not want to be separated from him, so she dressed in men’s clothing and joined another army which she knew was also going to the West Indies.
We will never know how she kept her secret for so long. Of course, in those days, there was hardly any medical examination of young men before they joined the army. It was enough if they had two good arms and legs and were not blind.
She stayed in the West Indies for five years. However, in 1733, her lover was ordered back to Europe. There was only one way she could follow him again: somehow she had to get out of the army. Julian went to an officer’s wife and told her the truth. By the time Julian got back to England, her lover was also there. He had been wounded and was in a hospital, close to death. She nursed him back to health. They were married shortly afterwards, and lived together in Brighton for almost fifty years until Golding died in 1783.

Passage 3
When animals make long journeys across places where there is no food or shelter, such as deserts (沙漠) or oceans, it is very important that they should be able to find their way accurately.
Birds find their way by the stars at night, and by the sun during the day. People thought that this was impossible. Then some scientists made an experiment. They put some migrating (迁移) birds in cages (笼子) inside a planetarium (天文馆). When the operator turned the artificial sky round, the birds began to fly to the sides of the cages. Every time he moved it, the birds moved to a new position. Scientists discovered that they always flew toward the direction in which they would have flown if the sky had been real. This proved that they could see the stars and respond to them.
Many animals, especially birds, have a very precise (准确的) sense of time, which is called their "internal clock." In cloudy weather, birds delay (推迟) setting off on long journeys, but if the cloud lasts for a long time, they must go at last, to complete their migration in time. In such conditions, they are able to steer (行进) by following the magnetic (磁的) field of the earth. We could say that they have their own special compass (指南针) inside them, which tells them the right direction to go.
Most migrating animals travel in groups, sometimes in very large numbers. This makes it more likely that they will find the right way, especially when the group has experienced animals which have made the journey before.

51. What is the passage mainly about?
A) How animals find their way in migration.
B) What scientists did to discover the truth about how birds find their way in migration.
C) Why some animals like to travel in groups.
D) What "internal clock" means.

B) birds have a built-in clock inside them
C) birds could see the stars and would move when the stars change position
D) birds always flew towards the south
53. If cloudy weather lasts for a long time, migrating birds _______.
A) set off on their long journey, relying on their internal clock
B) put off their long journey until the weather clears
C) follow experienced birds which have made the journey before
D) rely on the magnetic field of the earth to tell them the right direction to go
54. What does "Internal clock" mean in the passage?

B) An exact sense of time.
C) A special compass.
D) A correct sense of direction.

Passage 4
It is not in the British psychology to squeeze (挤) 25 hours out of 24, except the workaholics (工作狂). As a foreigner, you will notice this when you first set foot in Britain. Why is everyone so slow? But you get used to this. As for lateness in appointments, there are various reasons due to travel and weather conditions. In London especially and other cities, traffic jams in the city center make it very difficult to keep appointment times. When someone agrees to meet you at 10 a.m. from perhaps 50 miles away, you can expect him to be delayed anywhere between half an hour and two hours. It takes but one minor accident to cause a traffic jam.
Social events tend to be the most affected by unpunctuality (不准时). British people hate to be like clock-work when having fun. It's not rudeness (粗鲁) if people turn up later than expected, but simply a relaxed attitude towards recreation (娱乐).
However some people take this to extremes and do not show up at all without any explanation. They are usually service people like plumbers or repairmen. And if questioned later they always give a good reason. Traffic jams, delays in previous jobs, etc.
Public transport is much more guilty (有罪的) of unpunctuality than the individual. All bus stops have time schedules that are often a laugh because they might just as well not be there. Few British people seem to really mind, though.
You soon learn to while away time at the post office, bank, clinic, etc. Maybe that's why the British are mad about crossword puzzles. They really help in calming one down. A little philosophy also helps. Being stuck in a 20-mile traffic jam or waiting hours for a repairman gives you the time for thinking. It certainly makes you feel less stressful.

56. If you were in London for the first time, you would probably find that _______.
A) most people are workaholics
B) people try to make 25 hours out of 24
C) people take their time in doing things
D) people are always in a hurry
57. Regarding appointments, British people _______.
A) lay great emphasis on punctuality
B) are often delayed by traffic and feel very sorry
C) find it hard to be on time but do not seem to worry about it
D) can always give good reasons for being late
58. Social events in Britain seem to be most affected by unpunctuality because _______.
A) it is rude to behave like clockwork
B) people neglect punctuality when they have fun
C) such events are regarded as unimportant
D) one is expected to be late
59. People who take unpunctuality to extremes are usually _______.
A) bus drivers
B) post office workers
C) service people in clinic
D) plumbers and repairmen
60. We can infer from the passage that _______.
A) British people are slow by nature
B) British people prefer a more relaxed way of life
C) British people have little sense of time
D) British people have a philosophic turn of mind

Passage 1
When a child enters school, he will learn many different kinds of skills. For example, he will learn to speak correctly, to read well, and to behave properly. One of the most important skills that he must acquire is good handwriting.
There are two main ways in which the English language is written by hand. The first form is called printing. It looks much like the letters in a book. The letters have simple lines or curves (曲线). They are not connected. The second method of writing is called cursive. Cursive letters are slanted (斜) to one side. They are usually connected. Printing is usually learned before cursive writing.
Each person has his own style of cursive writing which is difficult to copy exactly. For example, it’s difficult to forge (伪造) a person’s signature (签名) on a check or credit card bill. Some people believe that your handwriting shows a lot about your personality (性格). The study of predicting a person’s character or personality from handwriting is called graphology.

The announcer wished everyone good night, and the picture faded from the screen. Mr. Barley stood up, turned off the television, and looked round the room. Then he turned out the lights and went up to bed. It was raining outside. He looked out across the road towards the river.
“If this rain continues, there could easily be a flood,” he thought.
He drew the curtains, took off his clothes, washed, put on his pyjamas and got into bed.
Some hours later he awoke. He sensed that something was wrong. It wasn’t a noise that had woken him up, it was more the lack of any noise at all. He got up, went over to the window, and looked down into the garden. The rain had stopped. The night was still and clear, and the moon was nearly full. But the garden wasn’t there any more, and the road wasn’t there; instead there was a lake, which stretched as far as the eye could see, with odd trees and bushes sticking out of it here and there. He called it “Esperanto”, which means, in his language “one who hopes.”
Doctor Zamenhof tried to make Esperanto so easy that anyone could learn it in one-hundred hours. It is easy to learn because it has only sixteen grammatical rules. Doctor Zamenhof’s alphabet is also simple. Each letter has only one sound.
No one knows exactly how many people in the world speak Esperanto. Experts say the number could be as many as fifteen million.
